General Questions
How do I assemble my vacuum?
- Insert the wand onto the pod and slide it down until it clicks in place.
- Insert the handle into the top of the wand.
- Connect the hose to the back of the pod.
- Store included accessories on the accessory posts on the pod.
For proper operation, ensure all parts are firmly clicked into place.
How do I use the different cleaning modes?
This Shark® vacuum has two powerful settings for cleaning. The surface selector switch is located on the power button.
To clean hard floors:
- Press the surface selector switch to setting I, Hard Floor.
- To engage the brushroll, tilt the handle back while gently stepping on the floor nozzle. Note that the brushroll will spin slower in this mode.
Note: Use the Hard Floor setting for maximum suction when cleaning above-floor areas.
For easier maneuverability on low pile area rugs, move the suction control slider on the handle to MIN to prevent rugs from lifting up.
For easier cleaning above the floor on upholstery and drapes, move suction control slider on the handle to MIN.
To clean low pile and thick carpets:
- Press the surface selector switch to setting II, Carpet.
- Tilt the handle back while gently stepping on the floor nozzle to engage the brushroll. Note that the brushroll will spin slower in this mode.
Note: Move the suction control slider on the handle to MIN to reduce suction when vacuuming carpets. Slide to MAX for more suction on bare floors.
How do I clean above-floor areas?
- First, release the power cord by turning the top cord hook down.
- Unlock the hose from the two anchor points behind the wand.
- Detach the wand from the pod by pressing the wand release button.
- Press the handle release button to detach the handle from the top of the wand.
- For more reach, reattach the handle to the wand.
- Attach a cleaning accessory to either the handle or to the end of the wand.
What does the Brushroll Indicator light on my vacuum mean?
Solid Green Light: The brushroll is spinning and working as it should.
Solid Red Light: There is a jam in the brushroll area. Turn your vacuum off, unplug from the wall and remove any blockages in the nozzle.
Flashing Red Light: The motorized floor nozzle is overheating. Turn off the vacuum, unplug it. and remove any blockages. Let the vacuum cool down for at least 60 minutes before restarting. Please visit our Troubleshooting Guide for more information.
Flashing Green Light: The vacuum is operating in an environment that is either too hot or too cold. This vacuum will only function properly in temperatures ranging from 32° F (0°C) to 104°F (40°C). Turn the vacuum off and adjust the room temperature.
What should I do if my vacuum is hard to push or pull?
Check the suction control slider on the handle.
For thicker carpet types, move the suction control slider toward MIN to reduce suction. This should increase maneuverability on carpet.
What happens if I experience small static shocks while vacuuming?
Certain dry temperatures in winter or dry desert areas may cause common static electricity to build up in the vacuum, producing small shocks, similar to what you might experience from contact with doorknobs, wool sweaters, or blankets. This is harmless. In order to avoid this, we recommend moisturizing your hands and/or removing wool socks or sweaters prior to vacuuming.
Why is my HEPA filter door not attached?
Your HEPA filter door may have detached from the vacuum before you opened the box. This may be slightly misaligned or completely separated.
If this happens, simply secure the HEPA filter cover by aligning it to the vacuum and pressing it in.
Cleaning and Maintenance
When and how do I clean the filters?
Filters may need to be cleaned if the vacuum stops picking up dirt, if airflow is restricted, or if you notice lighter suction or no suction. For optimal cleaning and Odor Neutralizer Technology performance, clean the filters regularly. Between cleanings, hold filters over the trash and lightly tap them to remove dust and debris as needed.
Rinse the pre-motor foam and felt filters every 3 months, or as needed.
- Remove the dust cup to access the pre-motor filters.
- Pull the release tabs on the dust cup handle and lift the dust cup away from the pod.
- Remove the foam and felt filters from the pod.
- Rinse both filters with cold water only.
- Allow filters to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
- Once the filters have dried, install the felt filter first, then the foam filter on top.
- Reinstall the dust cup by placing the bottom of the dust cup into the pod and then tilting until it clicks into place.
Rinse the post-motor HEPA filter every 12 months, or as needed.
- With the dust cup removed, take off the HEPA filter cover by pulling the arrow on top of the cover.
- Pull out the HEPA filter.
- Rinse the filter with cold water only.
- Allow filter to air-dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinstalling.
- Once the HEPA filter has dried, reinstall it by pressing it firmly into place.
- Reattach the HEPA filter cover by inserting the bottom portion first, then the top. Press until it clicks into place.
When and how do I empty the dust cup?
For optimal performance, empty the dust cup each time you vacuum, or when debris reaches the MAX FILL line.
- Pull the release tabs on the dust cup handle. Tilt the dust cup down, away from the wand, then lift it away from the pod.
- Hold the dust cup over the trash. Push the front-facing button on the bottom of the dust cup and the bottom lid will drop open.
- Tap gently to empty contents.
- Close the dust cup door until it clicks into place.
- While holding the dust cup over the trash, press the front-facing button on the top of the dust cup to open the top lid, then turn the dust cup over to empty it into the trash.
- Tap gently to remove contents. Clear debris from the cone-shaped screen.
- To reinstall, place the bottom front of the dust cup into the pod, then tilt it back toward the wand until it clicks into place.
How do I access and clean the main brushroll?
If you see any hair wrapped around the self-cleaning brushroll, continue cleaning using the Setting II (Carpet) on bare-floor surfaces to allow the hair to make its way to the dust cup.
If some fibers or string remain wrapped around the brushroll after continued use, carefully cut them away with scissors and remove from the brushroll. Clear away any debris from the airways in the floor nozzle.
Note: Do not vacuum wet messes.
